Savor in the Kitchen

Here is a little taste of the line called "SAVOR".
The kitchen has always been the heart of home for me.
That is where all the treats were, where all the good smells come from,
and best of all, that is where our family gathered.
Not only for every meal, but we spent many hours around the kitchen table
playing cards, board games, learning to sew, and doing various crafts with mom.
And when other families came over to visit, the kitchen seemed the one place where everyone loved to sit and visit.
Growing up, we had one of those long narrow kitchens,
great for running in your sock feet and then s-l-i-d-e!
This paper line...SAVOR...brings back so many great kitchen memories.

If you have some good ol' kitchen memories, you just might want to stop into Scrap & Bean and pick up your fill of Savor papers. Great for scrapbooking those memories. Also great for creating family cookbooks, recipe favorites.....which make great Christmas gifts!
Happy Crafting!

Time Change

This is the weekend to twist the clocks back an hour. This is the one day each year that I realize just how many clocks are in my house, vehicle, on my arm ..... they seem to be everywhere. For about a week, my house becomes divided into time zones. The zone where I have reset the clocks, and the "other" zone with the clocks I havent changed yet. Until it becomes a challange to remember which clock is correct, and I finally give in to updating all of them.
We are such a time sensative culture. Have you ever been in a place or country where they didnt care about the time? I was, for just a weekend, and what an adjustment for me! Many years ago I was in Tuktoyuktuk for the weekend of the Northern Winter Games. (Thats another story on its own.) But they dont (or at least they didnt then) care about time...at all! Oh they have schedules, they even print the schedule of events, and the location. Its just that they dont follow it. We are not talking about a delay of 15 minutes, or even an hour. Oh no, these winter games didnt take place until a day AFTER they were suppose to start. Why? The town didnt feel like it. Isnt that reason enough? They thought so.
I showed up on time, on location, and I was the only person there! So I started asking people, pointing to my printed schedule, is this time wrong? No, it wasnt wrong, they just dont do schedules. When the town feels like gathering, they just start getting together. When enough people gather, and they feel like starting the events, the word travels and things start happening.
If it happens today, its ok. If it happens tomorrow, thats ok too.
How do the businesses work? Well, there was only one store...the Hudson Bay. It had open hours posted, and the door was locked. Again...there is me walking down the street asking someone why the Hudson Bay wasnt open. Oh, turns out you knock on Annies door, and she will come open the store for you. It's all a bit odd when you come from a culture that has schedules, and times, and deadlines. What a relaxed way to live. I dont even know if these people had watches. Our culture would fall apart if we got rid of all track of time. But not the Tuk folks. It was totally working for them. Come to think of it, I've never heard of one of those locals having a heart attack either. Cultures are interesting, great to learn a little from eachother.
But in the mean time, I will start re-setting my clocks on Saturday night, and hopefully have the job done by end of the week.

Monster Eyes

Scrap & Bean has added Gooseberry Patch to our line of unique products. Always bringing you the mainstream along with the unique and unexpected!
Gooseberry Patch is known for their down-home-style recipes. You can get their tasty recipes in the form of cookbooks, calenders and meal planners....all at Scrap & Bean.
Since it is so close to Halloween, here is a recipe suitable for this week.....
Monster Eyes
3 cups baking biscuit mix
1 lb. ground pork
3-1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
54 green olives with pimentos (oh you can just see where these are going)
Blend the first 3 ingredients. Shape into 1" balls and place on greased baking sheet. Press one olive deep into each ball. Reshape if you need to. Bake at 400 degrees for 22 minutes or until lightly golden. Makes about 4-1/2 dozen.
Doesn't that sound like a tasty and spooky treat?
To see other recipes from Gooseberry Patch, visit their website here.

'Tis the Season

Can't you just picture this beautiful festive hanging decorating your home this season? I always feel the best decorations are hand made, and this one is no exception. Local crafter Shaylenne Twele has designed this project using locally made wares, both from her own company as well as using chipboard designed and manufactured by Ezee Pezee...another local company. I love Canadian made! And Alberta made is even better.

So you take the locally made products, add your own skills to put together this festive project. Dont have the skills yet? No problem! Shaylenne will teach you how, step by easy step. Learn lots of techniques, and have fun in the process!

Class date: November 5th, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Call or visit Scrap & Bean to register for this special class. Space is limited.

Introducing Suzy

Introducing..........(drum roll please).........Suzy Toronto!

Scrap & Bean carries both the first and second volumes of The Sacred Sisterhood of Wonderful Wacky Women.

These books are filled with stories about the kind of women that we are, the women we are friends with and the women we are related to.... they are ordinary women that face and overcome challanges in life. They have done extraordinary things, empowering and uplifting the women around them, and all of us that have the opportunity to read about them.

I must add....these books should come with a warning! This is not the type of book you want to read while standing in the store, well....not unless you pack a box of kleenex with you. And I don't have any to lend you today, because I have been reading Volume 2 and used the last of my own box.

These are the books you read, you cry, you laugh, you read some more, all the while thinking of the friends you simply must share your book with. When the pages are wrinkled, warn, and have a few tear drops on them, you pass them on to another wonderful wacky woman. Or...hang on to your copy as you know you will reach for this book to read again one day. But either way, its the kind of find that you tell your friends about, so they can have a read and be inspired by how ordinarily wonderful women are.

Suzy Toronto also creates inspiring Art Prints, making great gifts for not only the wacky women freinds in our lives, but great words of wisdom for young women, our daughters, and even our sons.

Suzy Toronto has a way of taking the words from my own heart and putting them onto paper so much better than I could express them myself.

Other gift items for your Wonderful Wacky Women Friends....

These coasters come packaged, dressed with a bow, ready to give. The perfect "little something" for those 'just because' gifts.

If you are one of those really organized people that starts planning Christmas gifts now, these are perfect! If you are not one of those people that plan ahead, then you wont like to be remined that its October 25th....just 2 shorts months before December 25th.....so I wont be the one to remind you (smile).

Scrap & Bean also brings you bookmarks and shopping bags all from Suzy Toronto. Can you tell we love Suzy? Come and meet Suzy, you will love her too!

Edmonton Toy Run 2010

Sunday was the annual Toy Run through Edmonton. It was a perfect day to be out enjoying the sunshine and a ride with friends. Some of them were stuffed friends pictured here. Cute little guys eh?

As Santa made his appearance (yes even this time of year) we all started our engines and you could feel the pavement rumble as hundreds of bikes rolled out of Capilano Parking Lot. By the afternoon, a semi-trailer was nearly filled with toys for the Santa's Anonymous. Great job Edmonton!
